Fitness runs in the family offers an expert personal training and small group training service in and around Guildford. We are a husband and wife team with over 30 years of personal training experience and fitness industry experience between us.

We offer a uniquely personalised service to take our clients towards their goals. Our training and nutritional programmes are absolutely bespoke to each and every one of our clients.

From complete beginners to seasoned gym-goers we work with you to take you to your next goal in your fitness journey. For example whether your goal is to lose body fat and tone up; to get back on track with regular exercise and you need a fitness kick-start; whether you wish to improve your running time over a particular distance; or re-gain strength and function in your core after having a baby we can help you.

We believe that every ‘body’ is individual with its own starting point, strengths, imbalances and challenges. We also understand that everybody is in their own unique situation. Alongside taking our clients through appropriate training sessions we will provide support and guidance; motivation and accountability; practical advice and knowledge based on latest research to help them achieve and surpass their fitness goals.

We do not believe in quick fixes. We believe in providing sustainable training and nutritional solutions and sharing our knowledge, facts and information to help our clients achieve healthy, balanced, happy, active living.

Our ethos of fitness as a lifestyle complemented by our dedicated service, which recognises that everyone is an individual who requires a bespoke training programme to achieve their goals, allows our clients to achieve results via enjoyable, realistic and achievable solutions.

We offer the opportunity to train with a knowledgeable, experienced and dedicated male or female personal trainer who will develop a training and nutritional programme specifically tailored to you.

Meet the Team

Lucinda Newman-Jones

I am a busy mother of three. I have been a fitness enthusiast my whole life. I specialise in pre and post natal training and body composition transformation - reducing the body fat % and increasing the lean tissue % (toning up).

I qualified with an Advanced Diploma in Personal Training and have qualifications and experience including: pilates, pre-and-post natal training, torso and core training, circuit training, HIIT (high intensity interval training), strength training, plyometrics, kettlebells, TRX (suspended bodyweight) training, nutrition for weight-loss and nutrition for sport and exercise.

In reality your training programmes will probably comprise of a selection of the above with specifically selected exercises put together in a certain way to be most effective for your needs and goals.

Since qualifying as a PT I have had the experience of helping hundreds of people, working both freelance and within Virgin Active where I ran the PT business overseeing up to 400 clients and managing 20+ trainers.

I love each and every hour which I spend training and motivating my clients. I am absolutely passionate about empowering my clients with the tools to create achievable lifestyle changes to help them reach their goals and continue to sustain their enthusiasm for exercise and good nutrition.

I wish to use my experience to motivate and inspire others to live fitter, stronger, healthier and happier lives.

Darren Jones

My career in the fitness industry has spanned over 2 decades and 2 continents. I have experience in everything from fitness modelling to senior management. In the past I have competed as a semi-pro rugby player and a competitive body-builder; I use aspects of these to create fun, dynamic, energetic and effective training sessions for my clients.

I have been qualified as a PT and group exercise instructor since 1992 and I have track record of achieving fantastic results for my clients. I also have qualifications in nutrition and sports massage.

Training is my passion and Personal Training is something I have always done along side other fitness industry roles.

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly “tough exterior” - I love working with my clients and motivating them in order to get the very best out of them both during and between their PT sessions. I enjoy the opportunity to motivate and inspire my clients to adopt fitness and good nutrition as true lifestyle choices. I have a vast range of experience in a huge variety of fitness coaching techniques ranging from starting a client off with their very first programme based at improving their general fitness and strength, to training athletes and physique competitors. So whatever your current condition or goals may be, I would love the opportunity to help you get there.

1 to 1 PT

Completely bespoke Personal Training - Each client’s training programme is completely unique, put together to be progressive, challenging yet realistic and set out to take YOU, most effectively, towards YOUR goals.

We provide nutritional guidance to go alongside your programme in the form of weekly meal planners and nutritional guidelines. This is included in the price.

Each programme is started off with an initial consultation. This is a 1 hour session where we conduct a thorough physiological assessment to gain your ‘before’ stats which will inform your bespoke exercise and nutritional programme and also can be used to assess you progress against. 

In the initial consultation we take a holistic overview of your current levels of fitness, strength and body statistics and take some ‘before’ photos.  We also talk through your goals, limitations, injuries / niggles, current regime, where you need most support, what motivates you etc.  And complete a PARQ (physical activity readiness questionnaire) which is important in health screening and flagging up anything which may mean we need to adapt exercises to suit you.

We will assess your progress periodically to help keep you on track.

2 to 1 PT

Training programmes for couples or two friends - programmes are individually tailored and complimentary allowing both clients to train effectively at the same time and have fun with some partner exercises too. Both clients benefit from an initial consultation as above.

Small Group Training

Training in groups of 3+ provides motivation, improves adherence and allows you to make and enhance friendships while working out. The perfect midpoint between 1 to 1 training and classes: you are able to workout with friends and benefit from individual attention, motivation and exercise correction or progression from the personal trainer.


If you aren’t local to us then we offer ‘online PT’. We communicate through face-time calls, email and text message. After gathering as much information from you as possible we write a bespoke fitness and nutritional programme to help take you most effectively to your goals. You are responsible for doing the exercise between the scheduled face-time check-in calls. You are also responsible for taking your own body-measures and photos to assess your progress. If you are self-motivated enough to do some exercise but aren’t entirely sure what is the best exercise programme to follow to get you most efficiently to your goals, or you need that little bit of help with adherence by checking-in with a PT to keep you on track, then this if for you.


We’re priced competitively. We offer a range of Personal Training and Small Group Personal Training packages. Please email us at for a price list.

We’re convenient. We bring the gym to you, so to speak; we will provide all equipment for your sessions. Some clients choose to purchase and use their own equipment so they can workout more between sessions. Sessions are carried out in your home / garden or local park.

All sessions are 1 hour in duration, unless otherwise arranged. Most clients choose to stick to the same time-slot(s) each week, with a little flexibility here and there as we understand the pressures of busy family life.

We’re safe. We are insured by FitPro insurance.

We’re friendly. We use the carrot rather than the stick approach. We aim to whip you into shape with a smile, not only on our face but on yours too. We love our job helping our clients through their fitness journeys and we hope to instil a passion for fitness and healthy living. We are big believers that exercise should be enjoyable.

We’re family friendly. Our clients are very welcome to bring buggies, babies and children under their own supervision.

So no matter which package you opt for, once you are a client, you are more than welcome to contact us regularly with your fitness / nutrition related questions, queries and concerns. We will then provided you with guidance, advice, support, information sources and top-tips to give you the best possible chance of achieving and exceeding your goals and getting into peak condition.

There are a variety of packages you can choose from: from one-to-one training, training together with a partner/friend, as a small group or remote / online PT.

Training sessions take place at your home or outside in a local park. Your Fitness Runs in the Family trainer is fully insured through FitPro and will provide the necessary equipment for your training session. Programmes are designed to be balanced, varied and enjoyable - focused on getting you to your specific and unique goals. We like to think holistically, and along with helping you towards your specific goal we aim to help you improve your cardio-respiratory fitness, strength, agility, flexibility, posture, core strength and core stability. Your programme will be progressive and challenging within your limits.

We believe that the relationship between trainer and client works best when there is loads of communication and constant feedback. We like to know what you are or aren’t enjoying so we can adapt the programme to get the best out of you. Similarly, it is important for us to explain to you why an exercise is effective and useful to you and your goals as well as simply demonstrating and explaining how to do it.

We research widely and stay abreast of the latest evidence. We combine both old-school proven methods and newer trends which are tried and tested to build programmes based on latest industry thinking in a fun and dynamic way to ensure sessions are enjoyable and effective.
