In Need of a Fitness Reset
This year has certainly been a challenging one so far. Thinking back to fitness goals we may have set back in January is like thinking back to another lifetime. So much has changed since then and we have been hit with so many unanticipated events.
Perhaps your goal was to get going with a Personal Trainer in Guildford or your local area this year, but before you knew it, lockdown was upon us and fitness was shunted to the bottom of your priority list.
You may have started lockdown with great intentions of incorporating home workouts into your schedule but as the pressures of working and schooling from home set in, it became harder to adhere to. If you managed to keep going with regular and consistent exercise over lockdown and the Summer holidays you deserve a massive pat on the back!!
Many of us are now emerging from lockdown and our Summer holiday downtime, with thoughts of new beginnings starting in September (September is a mum’s January!).
We are turning our minds to how we are going to fit exercise into our new schedules in the post-COVID world once term starts again in September… While also thinking that this may not be the last of the pandemic.
I think before launching into the next thing. It is good practice to pause and think about what has or hasn’t worked for you since the start of the year, and also think about what you feel comfortable taking part in with regards to exercise and fitness while the pandemic is still ongoing.
My best tips for incorporating exercise into your schedule in the second half of the year would be:
- Workout outdoors – I don’t know about you, but the hour of exercise we were allowed to do during the height of lockdown proved really important both physically and mentally. If you found this too, then continue getting outdoors for some of your fitness pursuits whether this is going for a run or cycle or joining a local bootcamp.
- Enlist a Personal Trainer – sometimes we all need a little professional help. This might be the option for you if you feel like you’re not sure where to start, you’ve got stuck in a rut and you feel you don’t have quite enough willpower to get started on your own. It’s great to have an expert take you through a fitness programme tailored to your goals and be your biggest cheerleader and greatest motivator as you find your fitness and strength again. The 1-2-1 nature of personal training is also more COVID-safe because of avoiding groups of people coming together.
- Follow an online fitness programme which is put together by an expert. Since working from home may be an ongoing thing, signing up to an online fitness programme would be a great option to help you keep fit without eating into your day too much. You can pick an exercise class that you want to do that day based on what you fancy and how much time you have in your schedule. Or you could follow a specific programme which has workouts allocated to a particular day to keep you progressing all from the comfort of your own home.
Whatever you decide works best for you, I would encourage you to stop deliberating and start doing. Schedule something in and just start with the first workout, then go from there. Hopefully, you’ll find the fitness bug starts to bite and you find a way to chip away at progress towards your September goals.
